The Kano State Ministry of Health has established a special unit aimed at promoting adolescent reproductive health and improving the well-being of young people, particularly girls, with a strong focus on menstrual health management.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, announced this while addressing journalists during the commemoration of the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed annually on May 28.
According to Dr. Yusuf, the global event is dedicated to raising awareness among women and girls on the importance of proper menstrual hygiene and breaking the silence surrounding menstruation.
He reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to improving the health and welfare of women and children across the state through policies and initiatives that support adolescent health and development.
The Commissioner noted that many young girls continue to experience stigma, fear, and emotional challenges during their menstrual periods, stressing the need for continuous education and support.
He added that the Ministry is collaborating with non-governmental organizations, school authorities, and other stakeholders to provide awareness and education on safe and healthy menstrual practices.
Dr. Yusuf also acknowledged growing calls from some women for the introduction of menstrual leave for working women and female students to help them better cope with menstrual-related challenges.
World Menstrual Hygiene Day was designated by the United Nations and is observed every year on May 28. The theme for this year’s celebration is: “Together for a Period-Friendly World.”
