China and Djibouti have reaffirmed their support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and opposed international recognition of Somaliland as an independent country.
The statement came days after US President Donald Trump described Somaliland as “a totally different country” from Somalia, a comment that sparked celebrations in Somaliland.
China and Djibouti also signed an agreement to strengthen security cooperation between the two countries.
In a joint statement, the two countries called for freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which are important routes for international trade and shipping.
They also stressed the need to respect national sovereignty and improve security in the Horn of Africa region.
