Justice Maryanne Anineh of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, has accepted more evidence in the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, over the alleged unlawful redesign of the naira.
During the court session on Monday, May 11, 2026, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) presented newspaper reports as evidence. The reports were taken from newspapers including The Punch, ThisDay, Vanguard, Daily Sun, and The Nation. Payment receipts used to buy the newspapers were also submitted to the court.
EFCC lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), told the court that the documents were presented in response to a request by the defence team. The defence had earlier asked the prosecution to provide all newspaper publications and press releases connected to the alleged unlawful naira redesign.
The witness, Jegede Oluwasegun, an official of the National Library, explained during cross-examination that his duty was only to certify newspaper documents and assist readers with information. He said he was not the writer of the newspaper reports and could not confirm the contents. Emefiele is currently facing a four-count charge filed by the EFCC over the alleged illegal printing of new naira notes.
