The resolution to create the Day of the Seafarer was adopted at the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila, which also revised the STCW Convention (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers). The first official celebration took place on June 25, 2011, and it is now recognized by the United Nations.
