Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has unveiled plans to invest about $2 billion in The Gambia, marking a major expansion of his infrastructure projects beyond Nigeria. The proposed investment is aimed at strengthening the West African nation’s energy sector through large-scale power and fuel infrastructure.
The announcement followed a meeting between Dangote and Gambian President Adama Barrow in Banjul on Tuesday during the African Caucus 2026 meeting. According to a statement from the Gambian State House, the investment proposal is expected to improve the country’s electricity generation capacity and enhance its fuel storage facilities.
Key components of the project include the construction of a 250-megawatt solar power plant to boost electricity supply and a modern fuel storage terminal to strengthen The Gambia’s petroleum reserves and improve energy security.
Dangote was accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer of First Bank Group, Olusegun Alebiosu, highlighting the involvement of one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions in discussions surrounding the financing and implementation of the proposed investment.
