Cuba has received a major shipment of humanitarian assistance from China, with 15,000 tons of rice arriving in Havana on May 23 to help address ongoing food shortages and economic difficulties facing the island nation.
The rice was transported aboard the cargo vessel Sunny Hong and forms part of a broader Chinese aid initiative aimed at supporting Cuba during a period of economic hardship. The delivery is expected to provide relief to thousands of Cuban families struggling with rising costs and limited food supplies.
According to officials, the shipment represents the first phase of a larger 60,000-ton rice assistance package pledged by China. Additional consignments are scheduled to arrive in the coming months, ensuring continued support for Cuba’s food security needs.
The aid package follows a decision approved by Chinese President Xi Jinping in January. In addition to the rice donations, China also committed approximately $80 million in financial assistance, underscoring the strong diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.
