The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) has organized a training workshop for women journalists aimed at promoting ethical journalism, responsible reporting, and adherence to the law while carrying out their professional duties.
Speaking during the workshop, participants were reminded of the importance of guarding their speech and avoiding defamatory statements. They reflected on the Qur’anic verse: “Not a word does one utter except that there is an observer ready to record it,” emphasizing the theme “Mind Your Tongue” as a guiding principle for journalists.
The workshop also focused on the role of women journalists in using the media to positively transform society and promote unity. Participants were encouraged to uphold the Islamic teaching that “Indeed, the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is the most pious of you.”
Discussions highlighted the issue of the underrepresentation of Muslims in Nigeria’s media space and the need for responsible journalism that promotes unity rather than disunity.
The first day of the workshop, coordinated by Dr. Sa’idu Ahmad Dukawa, featured presentations by distinguished scholars and media professionals, including Dr. Sunusi Uguda, Professor Muhammad Babangida Muhammad, Professor Gausu Ahmad, Hajiya Sa’a Ibrahim, former STV General Manager, Professor Aisha Abdullahi Isma’il, and Dr. Bala Muhammad.
In her remarks, Sayyida Bahijja Malam Kabara expressed appreciation for the knowledge and experience gained during the first day of the workshop. She urged members of the Association of Women Journalists to apply the lessons learned in their daily professional activities and remain committed to ethical and responsible journalism.
