The United States Congress has reportedly acknowledged that the US military lost or suffered damage to dozens of aircraft worth billions of dollars during the recent conflict involving Iran. According to reports presented before lawmakers, at least 42 aircraft — including fighter jets, drones, refueling planes, and surveillance aircraft — were either destroyed or heavily damaged during the operation.
Among the aircraft listed in the reports were advanced platforms such as the F-35 Lightning II, F-15E Strike Eagles, KC-135 refueling aircraft, MQ-9 Reaper drones, and an E-3 Sentry surveillance plane. The estimated financial cost of the losses has already reached billions of dollars, with some reports placing the figure at over $2.6 billion in damages and destroyed equipment.
Iranian officials have also claimed that their forces became the first in history to successfully strike an F-35 Lightning II during combat operations. While Iranian media and military statements insist the aircraft was hit by Iranian air defense systems, US officials previously rejected claims that any F-35 was fully shot down, though reports indicated one aircraft may have been forced into an emergency landing after suspected Iranian fire.
The latest developments have intensified tensions across the region, with Iranian officials warning that even “greater surprises” could emerge if hostilities resume. Analysts say the reported losses and the alleged targeting of advanced stealth aircraft could have major implications for future military strategy, regional security, and the global defense industry.
